The breaking of bread meeting provides an opportunity for quiet and contemplation, with the purpose of focusing on, remembering and worshipping the Lord Jesus in his perfect life, sacrificial death and victorious resurrection.
During the meeting the Christians take the bread and the wine in remembrance of the Lord Jesus’ body sacrificed for us and his blood, shed for us on the cross. We sing hymns, and the men lead in public prayer and give Bible teaching. A collection is taken but non-Christians are not expected to contribute.
The Scriptural basis for this meeting is The Lord’s instruction, given in to His disciples in Luke 19:22 on the occasion of The Last Supper: And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.”, and in a similar fashion he took the cup and said: “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.” (v 20).
